Jackson and Meg, the creative minds behind LaFrantz and Westward The Tide, don’t feel tied down by traditional genre labels. They are an LA-based duo that just want to make music they love.
“Alternative Pop is the easiest label, but I'd like to think we can be any genre, really. We like pop song structure quite a bit and we are definitely influenced by the music of our time. I think what makes us unique is how we blend those influences to create a variety of song styles. We are very much a product of our generation in that way. “
LaFrantz holds tight to their roots; the music they grew up with, the artists that inspired them, and the fans that continue to fuel them. They write music that comes naturally and from the core of who they are. The result is music that lets listeners in.
“Most of the time It's almost like a transmission. I will hear the music, lyrics, and melodies just come to me in a wave. I usually have to sit somewhere quiet and take in as much as I can. That gets quickly recorded onto a voice note for later and then Meg and I fine tune it together.”
Music might have been an unexpected destination, but now it feels like home.
“Our initial inspiration to start playing music together came from the Folk Rock surge that happened several years ago; Mumford and Sons, The Head and the Heart, etc. Those bands really inspired us to start writing music for the first time in our lives. I picked up a guitar, learned some chords, wrote a song, and performed it. We had such a great response to the music that we just kept doing it. I don't think we had any idea that it would actually turn into a prominent part of our lives. That was a big life lesson for me. TRY EVERYTHING. You never know what you may be good at or have a passion for. Now I can't even imagine what my life would be like without music.”
The relationship between LaFrantz and their listeners is symbiotic.
“The experiences that have impacted me the most are when our fans tell us what the music has done for them. Anything from using our song as their wedding song to telling us how the music got them through some really hard times. It means so much to us. When we started seeing cover versions of our songs pop up on the internet we just couldn't believe it.”
